Students stage protest over classmate’s suicide

Udupi, March 07, 2020:   The students staged a dharna demanding the arrest of lecturers and principal who allegedly had forced a student to commit suicide, at Government First Grade College in Hebri.



The students charged that four lecturers, including the college principal, had mentally harassed the student Charan Shetty, forcing him to commit suicide. The students boycotted classes and demanded justice for Shetty, a student of first year B Com.

Police sources said Charan’s father was summoned by the principal as he did not have the required attendance in order to appear before the annual examinations. It is said that Charan was in an inebriated state during the annual day celebrations.

Charan reportedly also got into an argument with the lecturers.

Based on the complaint by Charan’s father, police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against the lecturers.
