Mangalore, Jan 3, 2014: The Street Vendors association under the aegis of CITU staged a protest in front of the Central Market on January 3, Friday demanding the Mangalore City Corporation a permanent place to sell their commodities.

Addressing the protesters, CITU Honorary President Sunil Kumar Bajal said that the even though the Street Vendors Bill of 2012 has been passed, the street vendors are always opposed by the Central Market Vendors, interrupting in their business. He also criticized the Central Market Vendors for blaming street vendors of paying ransom to the police for allowing them to run their business. In turn he questioned the Central Market Vendors, the amount of hafta they pay to police to vacate the street vendors.

Bajal also recalled the ’Civic Tiger operation’ functioned by MCC under the leadership of the then Mangalore City Mayor Praveen Anchan, who made the families of street vendors suffer from hunger. Most of the street vendors also struggled to send their children to school, but never lost hope.

He also said that the BJP government had tortured the street vendors a lot and it was the main reason for their downfall in the previous election, he added.

The CITU protesters later submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
