Mangalore, April 9, 2014 : The Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Rajdoot’ in co-ordination with Coast Guard Surveillance Aircraft Dornier 776 seized ‘Colombo Marine,’ a high seas tuna long liner from Srilanka on the charges of illegal entry and poaching in the seas in Indian EEZ at Chereapani Reef, about 188 nautical miles off the New Mangalore Coast.
‘Colombo Marine’ had two tons of sea cucumbers and unauthorised fishing gears. There were 16 Sri Lankan fishermen on board the vessel, according to RM Sharma, Commander of Coast Guard.
The Sri Lankan vessel was seized on April 7, Monday evening after an operation that lasted four hours. A fishing boat ‘St Antony’ also came to the assistance of the Coast Guard in the operation.
The value of the seized sea cucumbers has been estimated at Rs 1.2 lakh dollars. All the 16 Lankan fishermen have been arrested. Apart from sea cucumber, the officials have also seized ten diving equipment, 16 cooking gas cylinders and high frequency wireless equipment from the vessel.
