Former vice-chancellor of Manipal University Dr. B M Hegde said physical education should be a psychological process involving training of mind and improving its health.  Winning or losing is not the aim of sports. The thought of we win is greater than I win.

He said sports education is the education of mind as well. Sports activities have been mistaken for competition with others. "Western culture suggests competing with others while Indian culture suggests competing with ourselves. But, we have been following Western culture blindly. It is not necessary that the sportspersons have a perfect health. Health is related with mind and not body," he added.

Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo felt a need to lay more emphasis on sports training to prepare the sportspersons from the district for national and international sports events.   Smaller countries than India fetch more medals in sports events. Hence, the sports talents from nation need to be nurtured in a systematic way, he said.

Kabaddi player Jagadish Kumble and his elder sister Kamala, Athlete Abhishek Shetty and his mother Tulasi Shetty, Kabaddi player Rakshith S and his parents Geetha S and Shankar S, Basketball player Sandhya C R and her parents Raju and Kalavathi, Kho-Kho player Deeksha K and her parents Koragappa Gowda and Prema, High Jump player S P Supriya and her parents Basavaraj and K C Vani were felicitated.
