Special drive to enrol voters across district begins tomorrow: DC

Mangalore, Mar 8, 2014: Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer AB Ibrahim has informed that a special initiative for enrolment of eligible voters  with special focus on young voters and first timers will be held  at booth level on March 9, Sunday. The drive will be conducted by the respective booth level officers, the DC informed and added that the drive will continue till March 16.

Speaking to reporters here on March 8, Saturday in the wake of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, he said special camps will also be conducted  in all 1766 booths across the district considering the fact that the progress in registration of young voters is just once percent.

He informed that there is time till March 26 to enrol the names of those whose names are missing in the voters’ list. The DC said a toll free number (1077) has been set up to facilitate the public to lodge any election rated or election code of conduct violation related complaint. The number will be functioning round the clock, he said.

 He said 24 flying squads, 24 sectoral magistrates, eight video viewing teams, 24 video surveillance teams , 24 static surveillance teams and 175 sector officers  have been appointed to monitor the activities of political parties and ensure that there is no poll code violation. He said during the upcoming elections, the candidates can spend upto Rs 70 lakhs for campaigning purpose.

A Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) is also operative at the district level under the leadership of returning officer and District election officer to scrutinise media content and to check paid news, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner informed that of the 1766 polling booths, 218 have been identified as hyper sensitive and 442 as sensitive booths.


He further said the election notification will be issued on March 19 while March 26 is last day of filing nominations. The same will be scrutinized on March 27 and March 29 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations, the DC informed
