The remains were first noticed by some local youth who were busy making arrangements for the  Shashti festival procession of Tokur Sri Subrahmanya Temple and were searching for some tree branches which can be used to fit lights along the procession route. The youth who were scared had immediately informed the police.

Though the identities of the deceased is not yet known, an ID card found in the trousers of one of the bodies  had  revealed that the man was an employee in the Panchakarma Department of Alva’s Ayurvedic Medical College at Moodbidri. Clothes, footwear, a ladies watch, three cell phones, a bike key and a SIM card were found near the bodies.A Mangalasutra was also found in the clothes of the girl.
