“She has boldly faced six surgeries, including two major ones when she was in class 5 and class 9,” said Ms. Lakshmi’s father Muralidhar Bhat. She is a student of Vivekananda English-Medium School in Puttur, and after every operation she had to on leave for nearly 40 days. “In case of the two major surgeries, the recovery period was longer,” said the young girl’s elder sister Sindhoora Saraswati, an engineering student.

During these recovery periods, Ms. Lakshmi borrowed notes from her classmates. “The teachers always supported Lakshmi and visited her regularly to clarify her doubts,” said Mr. Bhat.

Her ailment also did not come in the way of her interest in Carnatic music and dance. According to Ms. Saraswati, Ms. Lakshmi is feeling better after her final operation in 2017.

Mr. Bhat, an engineering graduate who is now an arecanut grower, said his daughter plans to pursue a career in medicine.
