Sirsi artist brings alive Art in Darkness

Mangalore, Dec 28, 2013: Though the monochromatic images stay only fleetingly, the eerie glow of the outlines remain etched in the minds of the viewer for far longer.

The light of a torch and the darkness of the hall became the tools for Vinay Hegde to bring forth intricate portraits, themes and images during the show on glow art held here on Friday.

With the lights switched off in Don Bosco Hall an uneasy darkness envelopes the audience. And with sudden spurts of focused lights on the canvas, the images slowly start to appear.

Starting off with the portrait of writer K. Shivaram Karanth, the Sirsi-born artist proceeded to illustrate a spread of the 10 avatars of Vishnu – all done amid devotional music and murmurs of the crowds naming the avatar before it takes shape on the canvas.

The art form becomes all the more impressive when the halos seem to emanate a greenish light captured by the canvas.

When the dasavatars fade, a Yakshagana artist – with the glow in his eyes intensified – is brought to life on the screen.

Mr. Hegde, who claims to have developed the art form and is perhaps the only proponent of the art form in the country, used skill, speed and improvisation to bring to life images that last for a maximum of five minutes. “The entire image has to be done within this time,” he said.

Commenting on the differences between glow art and other art forms, Mr. Hegde said there was no scope for mistake in the art form as, once the torch light strikes the canvas, the imprint is made.
