Mangaluru, Oct 18, 2019: Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah has lashed out at the BJP government at the Centre for its plan to confer Bharat Ratna on Savarkar. "This is empty patriotism of the prime minister," he said while addressing Congress workers at the St Sebastian Church Auditorium on October 18, Friday.
Pointing out that Savarkar who was the Hindu Maha Sabha President was also accused of conspiring Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination but was acquitted by the court, Siddaramaiah said neither the RSS nor the Hindu Maha Sabha men had participated in the freedom struggle. "Instead they had colluded with the British," he said and added that he hoped the intelligent people of Mangaluru would not vote to power a party which wants Bharat Ratna for Savarkar.
"The BJP had lied to the people during the previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections while the Congress failed to make people understand the truth. The Congress workers should now take up the task of highlighting the achievements of the party and fight unitedly," he said.
District Congress President and MLC Harish Kumar, former minister Ramanatha Rai, District Youth Congress Chief Mithun Rai, former minister UT Khader, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Vinaykumar Sorake and other party leaders were present.
