Mangalore, oct 13, 2011 :Two students of the Mangalore-based Sharada Vidyalaya attended the Tunza International Children and Youth Conference on Environment organized jointly by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Indonesia from September 27 to Oct 1.

sharadha The students are Albert Antony, a VIII Std student, and his brother Alwyn Francis Antony, a student of IV Std. The conference was based on the theme of “reshaping our future through a green economy and sustainable development “Rio+20,” during which the contribution of children to the adoption of environment friendly ways of living were reviewed.

The conference included field trips to a forest and an observatory, attended workshops on environment conservation, and given information of using of paper and jute bags instead of plastic and how to recycle, reuse, and reduce. Speaking about their experiences, the children spoke of how students from Patna and Bihar made floor tiles from broken bricks and discarded tiles and how Indian students from Qatar showed how water can be conserved from ACs and reused for plants. Around 25 students participated from South India.

Albert said that he had learned about the competition through the Internet and was selected by an organization called Tarumitra five months before the conference.
