Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Oct 20, 2012: The Bejai Market Horata Samithi organized a protest at the construction site of the Bejai Market on Oct 19, Saturday, against the delay in completing its construction.

KPCC Secretary Ivan D’Souza said that the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) had decided to upgrade Bejai Market into a hi-tech market back in 2004 and began construction on the same in 2008, in spite of which the work is still pending. Eight years back, the estimated cost of construction was Rs. 6 crore, but now, because of the delay, the estimated cost of construction has become Rs. 20 crore.

The work has been delayed because no contractor is willing to take up the job, he said and added that, if the MCC fails to appoint a contractor, the samithi will gherao the MCC and lock up the commissioner’s office.

Speaking on the occasion, Samithi President B. Ramdas Bhat said that the traders were requested to conduct their business near Bejai Church and assured that the market will be completed in 10 months. But the market is not ready even after four years, he complained, adding that the government is least bothered about the difficulties of the working class.
