Mangalore, Aug 22, 2014: Sahyadri Premier League (SPL), an intercollegiate football tournament— ‘Monsoon Trophy2014’ was inaugurated at the Sahyadri college campus here, on August 21.
Inaugurating the event, Olympian and Arjuna awardee Vandana Shanbhag said unlike past, the present students are considering sports as a career option.
The country is slowly realising the need for producing worldclass players and has started providing facilities to them, she said.Even the parents are supporting sports now a days. Training facilities available to improve the capacity of an athlete, she said.
District Physical Education Teachers’ Association President Dayananda Mada said that because of TV, students have diverted from ancient ‘Rushi’ and ‘Krushi’ culture . However, sports events would help students to nurture themselves and also helps in personality development.
SCEM Principal Prof U M Bushi hoped that the tournament will be continued for many years. Consistency should be maintained and tournaments should become case studies for future, he said. 4days, 34 teams
Department of Business Administration Director A P Achar said that 34 teams have registered their names for the four-day tournament.
The winners will get a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and runners up will get Rs 10,000 with the trophy. The income earned through the tournament will be donated to orphanage schools, he said. SPL Chief Executive Officer Ronson Menezes was present. There is good interest in the tournament.
