Udupi, June 15, 2019: A team of students of the final year Electronics and Communications Engineering course of the Bantakal-based Sri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) has developed a Smart Traffic System project to facilitate smooth movement of traffic.

A press release said that the team of students comprised Prajwal, Shashank S. Nayak, Vaishakh and Vikas Pandey. Fast transportation systems and rapid transit systems were the need for the hour. Traffic rule violation, safety rule violation and traffic congestion resulted in long waiting time, loss of fuel and money.

The number of vehicles on the road was increasing. One way to improve traffic flow and safety of the transportation system was to apply traffic surveillance using image processing techniques. It is to address these problems that the team developed the Smart Traffic System.

This system checks traffic on a particular road so that the user can be alert in advance for a traffic condition at a specific time. It suggests alternative roads to the user and also has a feature to handle traffic using traffic light controller with the help of image processing at junctions.

If this system is implemented, it would be helpful for the Police Department in detecting motorcyclists riding without helmet and also in recognising licence plates of vehicles which violate traffic rules. This system is implemented using GSM and image processing techniques, the release said.
