Puttur, Mar 01, 2023: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has come out with its second list of the candidates who will contest the Karnataka Assembly elections this year and has fielded Shafi Bellare, an accused in BJP leader Praveen Nettaru’s murder case, from Puttur.
The SDPI has come out with a list of nine candidates, including Bellare, who will be contesting the upcoming Karnataka polls.
Shafi Bellare was allegedly involved in the murder of the BJP Yuva Morcha leader in Karnataka in July last year. The murder was allegedly plotted by the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI).
Nettaru, a resident of Bellare and BJP youth wing member, was killed with sharp weapons allegedly by cadres of the now-banned PFI on July 26, 2022.
There are three accused in the case. Shafi Bellare is currently in the custody of the National Investigation Agency.
During the NIA probe, it was revealed that a conspiracy had been hatched by leaders and members of the PFI to murder Nettaru to take revenge and to strike terror among the people of society.
There are 224 constituencies in Karnataka, which are set to go to the polls later this year. There will be a tough competition between the ruling BJP led by Basavaraj Bommai and the Opposition Congress.
However, the infighting between veteran Congress leader Siddarahmaiah and president of the Karntaka Pradesh Congress Committee D K Shiva Kumar--both of whom are eyeing the Chief Minister’s seat--may play to the advantage of the BJP.
