Rs. 10,000 fine for builders violating malaria control rules

Mangalore, Sept. 1, 2011: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has decided to crack down heavily on builders who violate vector-borne disease control guidelines by increasing fines imposed on them to Rs. 10,000 at its monthly council meeting held on Tuesday. So far, the civic body was imposing fines of Rs. 1000 on builders who do not take malaria control measures while constructing buildings, but the civic body feels that this is not enough.

According to an official note circulated with the agenda of the meeting, the existing fine of Rs. 1000 has had absolutely no effect on builders who continue allowing rain water to collect at construction sites. On July 9, a malaria control meeting was held to discuss ways to prevent the rapid spread of malaria and one of the steps suggested was to hike fines imposed on builders who violate anti malaria guidelines.

 

 

Corporation Health Officer Manjayya Shetty said that an official warning will be issued to builders to ensure that they don’t allow water to stagnate at construction sites. If the builder still does not address the issue, he will be fined Rs. 10,000. If pools of stagnating water are still seen during the third inspection of the construction site, the builder’s license will be suspended.
