Road laid to Nethravathi for Sand, public objection ignored

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Feb 05, 2018: Ignoring objections raised by the public, the sand contractor has laid a road across River Netharavathi in Ilanthila village near Uppinangady, for the extraction of sand from the river and supplying it for the highway four-lane work.

Debris and  soil has been dumped into the river and three pipes  have been laid in an unscientific manner. The road has been laid to facilitate the movement of lorries.   Following the outcry, the DK DC  directed Revenue Inspector Prasanna Pakkala and Village Assistant Chandra Nair to visit the spot.

Prasanna Pakkala said that he will submit a report to Deputy Commissioner.  “No permission was taken for laying the road across the river. This obstructs the movement of water and pollutes the river. This will have an impact on the water supply system in the future. Moreover, there is a possibility of misuse of the road,” Pakkala said.

However, even after the visit by revenue inspector, the work continued and the road was completed.

Stop work order :  After the DK DC came to know about this, it is said that he had instructed to suspend the work. In spite of it, the road has been laid.  “Nethravathi is the lifeline of Dakshina Kannada district. The use of earthmover to lay the road has polluted the water as well. The unscientific laying of the road across the river will have its impact on the water supply,”  it was stated..
