The price of onion, which was below Rs 45 till July end, gradually found increasing. On Friday, the wholesale price of onion in Central Market, which is the major market in the district, stood at Rs 54 per kg. It was sold to retailers at Rs 58 per kg and as a result, the price crossed Rs 60 in retail market.

Wholesale dealers say that the increasing trend of price hit the onion business in large scale. "We have received onion at Rs 54 per kg today. The sale has been hit by 75 per cent due to the increased price and shortage of supply. The fluctuations in rain and other climatic reasons hit the onion trade," Central Market Merchants Association former president Peter D’Souza told sources

Sources in Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) said the price of onion is Rs 52 per kg as per their list. However, APMC Mangaluru does not market onion, sources said. Meanwhile, rate of onion in Hopcoms outlets on Friday was Rs 58. Traders now expect reduction in onion price after the arrival of new batch in the first week of September
