Mangalore, Aug 23, 2013: The much awaited reservations for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation, have been announced. As per the announcement the Mayoral post is reserved for a general category lady candidate while the Deputy Mayor’s post is reserved for a general category candidate.

The Congress which has won a clear majority by winning 34 out of the total 60 seats, has a total of 14 women corporators and every one of them are eligible  for the top post. The Congress lady corporators are Pratibha Kulai, Kavitha Sanil, Akhila Alva, Appi, Nagaveni, Latha Salian, Sabitha Misquith, K Jubaida, Jacintha Vijaya Alfred, Asha D’Silva, Sumaiyya, Shailaja, Kavitha and  Rathikala.

Of these Jacintha Vijaya Alfred is a senior member who has been elected for the fourth time. As for the rest, Appi has won for the third time and Kavitha Sanil and Nagaveni for the second time.  Kavitha Sanil and Jacintha had earlier served as Standing Committee Presidents.

Of the total 20 seats which the BJP has won, six seats are held by women. The JD(S) which won two seats has one lady corporator while  there is an independent lady corporator too.

 For the second successive year, Mangalore will be having a lady mayor. Gulzar Banu of the Congress was elected the mayor by default during the final year of the BJP term.

The Congress mayor who will be elected this time would be the seventh lady mayor of Mangalore.  The earlier women mayors are Eunice Britto (1993-94), Hilda Alva (1998-99). Sundari(2000-2001), Vijaya Arun (2006-2007), Rajani Dugganna (2010-11) and Gulzar Banu (2012-13)
