Bantwal, Oct 24, 2018: The sudden release of water from the AMR dam at Shambhoor on October 24, Wednesday caught several students who were enjoying a swim in the Netravathi river at Navoor unawares when the water level rose swiftly. If six of the 11 students who were in the waters managed to swim ashore, the rest finding no other way clinged on to a rock on the other side of the river.
Meanwhile, on hearing the screams of the students, locals rushed to the spot and rescued the five children.
As it was a holiday on Wednesday on account of Valmiki Jayanthi, 11 students had ventured into the Netravathi river which flows close by the Lakshmi Vishnumurthi Temple in Navoor Gram Panchayat.
Bantwal Rural SI Prasanna and his staff also visited the spot. It has been gathered that the students were from another taluk and had been to participate in a sports meet organised at SVS College.
Meanwhile, Shambhur AMR dam authorities have clarified that they had sounded a siren before releasing water.
