Rationing of water in Mangaluru from today

Mangaluru: March 20, 2017: With water level at Thumbe vented dam across the Netravathi, the main source of drinking water to Mangaluru city, depleting, the authorities of AMR Hydro Power Project at Shambhoor on the upstream of the dam have released water to Thumbe dam.

Speaking to DH, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that water would be released from the AMR dam till the water-level in Thumbe dam reaches 4.8 metre. The maximum storage level is five metre. “It will take few hours for the water from Shamboor to reach Thumbe. The distance between the two vented dams is about seven km,” he said.

The maximum storage capacity of AMR dam is 6.25 metre. The MSEZ and MRPL draws 10 MGD water from AMR dam on a daily basis. Though 160 MLD water is pumped to the city daily from Thumbe, about 40 MLD is lost between Padil and Thumbe.

Water to be rationed
The MCC will start rationing water supply from Monday. Starting 6 am on Monday, Mangaluru will get water only once every 36 hours. The inflow to Thumbe and AMR Power Project dam at Shambhoor has become zero, which has promoted the civic authorities to go for rationing of water.

Mayor Kavitha Sanil has appealed to the Mangaluru citizens to utilise the water judiciously and not to waste water for gardening and washing vehicles.
