Ration card issue highlighted at ZP meeting

Mangalore, Oct 20, 2011: The DK Zilla Panchayat held its fourth general body meeting in the ZP office today. 

Mamatha Gatti of the Congress party initiated discussions by questioning the food and civil supplies department’s decision not to issue any new ration cards. She complained that several BPL cards have been cancelled without any notice, adding that even APL cards might soon be cancelled without any notice. Speaking about the importance of ration cards, which are widely used to provide identity and address proof, she said that actions such as cancellation of ration cards without prior notice reflect irresponsibility on the part of the department. 

She further stated that officials and ministers have done nothing to solve this problem, adding that they have only made empty promises. 

The problems of arecanut growers struggling against yellow leaf disease were also discussed at the meeting and it was pointed out that the government has not yet compensated these farmers. 

Vision 2020, a document prepared by the ZP for the development of DK, was also discussed. 

Shailaja Bhat, the ZP president; Dhanalaxmi, the vice president; Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO; and the GP members were also present at the meeting.
