Mangaluru, July 08, 2019: Crime against women and children can be prevented only when India too has a law as in Saudi Arabia where rapists are hanged in public, said former Puttur MLA Shakuntala Shetty.
She was addressing a protest organised by the DK District Congress Committee in front of the DC office here on June 8, Monday demanding stern action against the accused in the case of gang rape of a student in Puttur.
Shakuntala Shetty recalled how the BJP had raised a hue and cry over the Sowmya Bhat murder case reported from Puttur 20 years ago just because the accused belonged to another community. She also pointed out at the allegations hurled by MP Shobha Karandlaje against District in-charge Minister U T Khader over the recent stabbing case at Bagambila near Derlakatte. However, it is an irony that the MP is silent over this gang rape case, she further added.
DCC Chief Harish Kumar, former minister B Ramanatha Rai, former MLA Moidin Bava, District Youth Congress President Mithun Rai, District Mahila Congress Chief Shalet Pinto , Suresh Ballal, Shashidhar Hegde and many Congress leaders participated in the protest.
