Mangaluru, Mar 18, 2015:   Addressing the road safety meet at his office here, on March 17,  DK Deputy Commissioner Adoor  B Ibrahim  directed the regional transport officials to conduct random check  of buses to test whether they follow basic transport norms or not.  He asked officials should check whether buses have doors, horn, proper gangway width and also to check whether they are following reservation of seats to women, senior citizens and physically handicapped.

Meanwhile, public requested bus association leaders to issue bus passes to physically handicapped throughout the year, instead of one month. Public expressed concern about the safety for  passengers. They said that in an average around 450 road accident cases are being reported in the city and around 1,000 in the district. Seat belt and helmet with ISI mark should be made mandatory within the city. DCP Vishnuvardhan said seat belt will be made mandatory and those who violate rules have to pay fine in days to come.

A detailed  discussion on  the problem of footpaths, Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said the corporation will act on the problem at the earliest. About epoxy painting to Zebra crossing, officials said that 300 square metres of painting has been done in the city and remaining will be completed soon to help pedestrians.

Road humps :  MCC  officials informed that  31 road humps have been constructed in the city and eight more are required. However, about the issue of constructing 97 auto rickshaw stands is still in limbo. The issue was rejected in the MCC Council meeting because of different reasons including confusion in identified places. The DC directed the officials to convene  a meeting of auto drivers within 15 days and complete the construction work by monsoon.

Bus bay, a long-pending demanding of bus owners association, will be constructed in 17 places of the city and 40 places have been identified. They said that the work on bus bay has been completed at Bavutagudde and they have to workout whether to use concrete or fix interlocks. However, the DC suggested interlocks .

Controling  traffic : MCC Commisioner, Hephsiba Rani Korlapati alleged that some bus drivers, especially in the morning, are not following road safety norms. They have to consider the safety of general public. Drivers should be careful when road construction work is going on in several areas, she said. Answering a query, ACP Uday Nayak said that there are around 115 staff in the traffic police department in the city and around 65 are available to control traffic.

About fixing signal lights at Nantoor-Bikarnakatte cross road, officials said that work order has been given just two days ago and it has to be done at night. The DC directed to fix speed breaker rumblers for all four roads near Nantoor junction. RTO Afzal Ahmed Khan, Canara Bus Operators’ Association President Rajavarma Ballal were present among others.
