Precarious water situation in DK - MP instructs supply in tankers

Mangalore, June 28, 2014: The water shortage in Dakshina Kannada district and the delay in sanctioning of drinking water projects came in for a discussion at the Dakshina Kannada district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting at Zilla Panchayat here June 27.

Raising the issue of supplying river water directly to the households without purifying at Sajipa Munnur gram panchayat, Bantwal Taluk Panchayat President Yashwanth Deraje detailed that several children had fallen ill following the consumption of river water. The doctors treating them too has cited the consumption of unpurified water as the reason for the illness.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel instructed officials to ensure that water is supplied through tankers in the gram panchayat. ZP Vice President Sathish Kumpala alerted that Kumpala village was facing water shortage. Water was not available in any of the six borewells in the region now,  it is proof of depletion in ground water table.

“There is acute shortage of water in the district. Water is not available even after digging 600 ft. But the government is projecting DK as a water surplus district . A permanent water project has to be taken up for addressing water issues in the district,” he urged.

While briefing about multivillage water scheme, the officials said that 90 per cent of the work on Kinnigoli vented dam has been completed and the project will be available for public use in October. As far as the work on Malavoor dam is concerned, tender process for water purification unit and pipeline is yet to be invited and the work is expected to complete in two years.

Vented dam project has been approved for Narikombu, Sarapady and Sampaje, the official said.

An official from PWD said that the department has sent a proposal to repair 296 km of district road and 199 km state highway this year. Patch works that were identified last year have been completed.

When the issue of blocking houses under Indira Awas Yojana came in for discussion, ZP CEO Tulasi Maddineni said that houses were blocked as the beneficiaries had started construction even before the work order was issued.
