Mangaluru, Nov 14, 2018: The good news on children’s day Prathyush P. Poduval from Mangaluru, who is a student at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has won silver medal in the 2018 edition of International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) held in Beijing, China, between November 3 and 11.
Prathyush was among the five members who represented India in the event. As many as 214 students from 40 countries participated in the event. Overall, the Indian team bagged three silver and two bronze medals.
Prathyush, a student of Canara Pre University College, had undergone training at the Centre for Advanced Learning, Kuntikana, for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana and other competitive examinations. He was the topper in Karnataka in the KVPY in 2017. He has been receiving Rs. 84,000 a year as scholarship.
In another event, Mahima Sherigar of Derik’s Chess School, Kunjibettu, Udupi since 2013, was declared the second runner-up in the Karnataka State Junior Girls (Under-19) Chess Championship held at Kalaburagi recently.
Mahima scored 5.5 points in 7 rounds. In the final round she drew with the champion WCM Ananya Suresh to bag the honour. With this performance, she has been selected to represent Karnataka in the upcoming National Junior Girls Chess Championship to be held in Delhi.
Two time national medalist Mahima had recently won the fourth place in State Women Championship held in Mysuru and has been selected to represent the State in the National Women Championship.
Mahima had represented Mangalore University in the recenly held South Zone Chess Championship in Chennai and had scored 7 points in 7 rounds individually. Now she imparts training at Derik’s Chess School and inspires young talents of Udupi to become an achiever like her.
