Mangalore, July 11, 2013: Senior Congress leader and former union minister B Janardhana Poojari said that BJP leaders are opposing the amendment brought in Karnataka Panchayatraj Act without the factual knowledge.
Speaking at the press meet held at Press Club on July 11, Thursday, he said that according to the Indian Constitution, gram panchayats are self-governments and the amendment was made to the Act to give more power to people in the local governments.
He also said that as people are given opportunity to speak about development or other issues related to their village in the gram Sabha, it is as important as the legislature. There is nothing wrong in holding gram panchayat presidents and members responsible for not conducting gram sabha meetings, he added.
Poojari said that it is the joint responsibility of all political parties including Congress to make the Re 1 per kg rice scheme successful. They must ensure that the scheme is being implemented properly, Poojari said adding the leaders must also inform the officials if any family is left out from the scheme.
Congress leaders Arun Coehlo, Kallige Tharnath Shetty, Suresh Ballal and Harikrishna Bantwal were present.
