Mangaluru, May 29, 2015: Elections for 3,399 seats spread across 227 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada and 2,398 seats in 155 Gram Panchayats of Udupi district commenced at 8 am on May 29, Friday.
Voters were seen standing in queues in different booths eager to exercise their franchise. Voting has also commenced for the first phase of GP elections in various other districts of the state. Unlike the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, voting is through the old ballot system while the indelible ink will be marked on the left thumb.
There are a total of 880 polling booths in Dakshina Kannada district and 65 of these booths are in Naxal affected areas. The fate of as many as 7,619 candidates including 3,604 women candidates will be decided today.
In Udupi, 4,740 candidates including 2,229 women are in the fray. A total of 907 booths have been set up.
The administration has initiated elaborate security arrangements for the polling which will be held upto 5 pm.
