Sullia, Aug 14: A clash between the Congress and the BJP created tension in Sullia on Aug 13 Saturday as a result of which there were traffic jams when the two parties held protest meetings in two separate places. The police were later forced to use their lathis to control the crowds.

The Congress activists staged a protest against the alleged remarks of Dr. Prabhakar Bhat, the RSS leader, against Dr. Kurunji Venkataramana Gowda, the educationist, that the latter does not have any manners. The Sullia Block Congress Committee had planned this protest nearly 15 days back.

The BJP Yuva Morcha also held a protest against Ramanath Rai’s alleged remarks that the new government is “Alibaba and his forty thieves.” The BJP youth workers also threatened that they would not allow Rai to enter Sullia. When they came to know that Rai was actually in Sullia protesting against Mr. Bhat’s statement, the BJP youth workers blocked the road and rushed towards the podium when Rai opened his mouth to speak.

When he heard about the BJP youth workers’ determination not to let him enter Sullia, Rai adamantly said that he sticks to his statement and will not take back his words. Mentioning the names of Shobha, Yeddyurappa, Reddy, Renukacharya, Katta, Reddy, and Halappa, he demanded to know whether they were not thieves.
