Mangaluru, Sep 07, 2016: A resident of Shankerapura near Katapady in Udupi district who was supposed to take a flight to Muscat by an Air India Express flight on September 6, Tuesday, was told to disembark from the flight just because he did not have enough cash to pay for the excess baggage he had in his possession.
Valerian Mathias who had arrived at the airport and had also obtained boarding pass was allowed to take his handbag at the check-in and security but the staff of the aircraft who observed that his baggage was 1.5 cm bigger than the stipulated size demanded that he paid Rs 1500 as baggage charge. However Valerian had just Rs 1000 cash with him and his request that he would pay the balance Rs 500 later was not agreeable to the staff who asked him to move out of the aircraft.
Meanwhile, Air India Express officials said that the passenger had refused to pay the Rs 1250 fee prescribed for having a baggage weighing 14 kg as against the prescribed limit of 7kg. Though a request was made to ensure that the amount could be paid by his relatives who had come to the airport to see him off, it was futile. Finally he agreed to pay through card when it was just ten minutes before take-off. As the flight was ready and the doors closed, he could not board the aircraft, the officials said.
