Mangalore, Jan 7, 2014: Pandeshwar police have arrested two women of Tamil Nadu origin who used to steal gold from houses and in buses. Gold valuables weighing 12.96 sovereigns worth Rs 2.5 lakhs have been seized from them.
Those arrested are Maheshwari (32) and Nagu (22) of Karoor district in Tamil Nadu. Of the two Nagu also has a kid. The two who were lurking suspiciously on the Old Kent Area during the wee hours of January 6, Monday were taken into custody when the thefts came to light.
It is learnt, the two have admitted that they had burgled a house on Nagabana Road in Pandeshwar Shivanagar in November 2013 and had stolen jewellery.They also revealed that they had snatched the jewels of a woman who was travelling in a bus near Derebail the same month.
The two had hidden the stolen gold wrapped in a plastic cover, amid the bushes near the railway track. The same has been seized by the police. The seized valuables include a Mangalasutra, a gold chain, one necklace, two finger rings, one set of ear studs and one bracelet.
The accused were residing in makeshift tents near the railway station and used to target locked houses during wee hours. Sometimes they even travelled in buses wearing burqah and steal gold jewellery.
The arrests were made under the guidance of ACP Pawan Nejur. Police are investigating to find if the accused were involved in any other theft cases or were part of some racket.
