Panchayat heads visit Mechanized Garbage Disposal Unit set up in Belapu

Udupi, May 12, 2012 : The heads of gram panchayats and town panchayats in Karnataka and Kerala have expressed their interest after viewing the mechanized garbage disposal unit set up in Belapu village, near here, on an experimental basis on their visit on May 10, Thursday.

The heads and panchayat development officers of Madoor gram panchayat in Kasargod district of Kerala, Bajpe, Laila, Ujire, Niddle, and Someshwar in Dakshina Kannada district arrived to view the unit at Belapu.

Young engineers Nidhish Shetty, a native of Alevoor, and Abhiman Shetty, a native of Kaup, invented a garbage disposal plant for the first time in Karnataka. The live demonstration of the newly-invented garbage disposal unit was held for the first time in Belapu gram panchayat, on Wednesday May 2.

 Madoor gram panchayat president Madhav Master, vice-president Sujnani Shanbagh, members Gopalakrishna, Ravindra Rai, and Malati expressed interest in installing the unit in Madoor.

Bajpe gram panchayat president Sahool Hameed and former president Surendra Pergade expressed their interest, but had to make a feasibility report.

Someshwar gram panchayat vice-president Ramesh, panchayat development officer Vishwanath, Niddle gram panchayat development officer Purushottam, Laila gram panchayat development officer Prakash Rai, and Ujire gram panchayat development officer Susheela S Hegde expressed happiness over the unit and said it will take some time to finalize.

The heads of Katpady, Shirva, and Padubidri gram panchayats are also interested in the unit. Belapu gram panchayat president Deviprasad Shetty offered information on the garbage disposal unit.

“Madoor gram panchayat that has a population of nearly 35,000 is being provided state funds of Rs 85 lac annually under category 1, in addition of Rs 2 crore from various sources,” said Madhav Master adding that the state funds are available up to 75 percent for installing the unit and Kerala government has hiked the housing funds from Rs 75,000 to Rs 2 lakh.
