Udupi, Nov 11, 2023: A court in Udupi has sentenced Atul Rao to one year imprisonment for cheating, fraud and creating fake documents with regard to the case of missing and suicide of Padmapriya, the wife of former Udupi MLA K Raghupathi Bhat.

Padmapriya

Padmapriya had gone missing from her house at Karamballi on June 10, 2008. It was alleged that Raghupathi Bhat’s friend Atul Rao had taken Padmapriya to Kunjarugiri where the car was abandoned with her bangle pieces and blood stains to stage a kidnap drama. Padmapriya was subsequently found dead in an apartment in Delhi where she had reportedly committed suicide.

Raghupathi Bhat had lodged a complaint on June 19 the same year leading to investigation. However the abetment to suicide case was dropped against Atul due to lack of evidence.

In the case of cheating Atul was fined Rs 5000 apart from one year imprisonment. Additionally, he has been given six months imprisonment and has been imposed a fine of Rs 5000 under IPC 417, 455 and 471.
