Over five hundred years old idols discovered at Sri Venkatramana Temple, Car street, Mangalore

Mangalore, March 26: Over five hundred years old idols have been discovered atop the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Venkatramana Temple, Car Street, Mangalore on Saturday, March 26.

 

 

 

 

 

As the renovation work of Sri Ventramana temple is on progress, priests of the temple have found several idols and statues including that of Mahishasuramardhini, Kadagolu Krishna, Shesha Shayana Vishnu and of Varahi, one of the ten incarnation of lord Vishnu.

The priests consider the discovery to be very auspicious as the renovation work is under way. It is believed to have been set aside centuries ago while the present idols were placed as the presiding deities of the temple. Sri Manjeshwara Mukund Prabhu, a scholarly historian has assessed the eon of the idols and statues found in the temple. He said that these five idols are atleast five hundred years old.

Idols of Goddess Lakshmi Devi, Muralidhara Krishna, Lord venkatramana, Hanumantha, Benne Krishna, Kalinga Mardhana Krishna, Bhoodevi, Sree Devi Shrinivasa, Sudarshan Chakra and Conchs were also found along with the above idols. “These idols are atleast two hundred years old”, opined Mukund Prabhu.

It may be recalled that the renovation work of Sri Venkatraman temple had commenced on 24th  March and it is expected to be completed in ten months time. The foundation ( Nidhi Kalasha / Shilanyasa) for the new temple will be done on May 6 and the consecration will be done on January 24, 2012, two days before the Car festival(Theru). At present the pooja in the temple is done in a make shift temple (Balalaya) beside the existing temple.
