Organizations stage massive protest against cow slaughter ban

Mangalore, February 25: Several organizations jointly staged a protest against the ban on cow slaughter in Mangalore on Feb 25, Thursday. Thousands of people participated in the protest, which included a protest march that commenced at Jyothi Circle and ended at the DC office. Protestors shouted slogans against the Sangh Parivar and the state government.

President of Komu Sauharda Vedike Pattabirama Somayaji accused the Sangh Parivar of casting an evil influence on a unified society of Christians, Dalits, Muslims, and other backward classes. Pointing out the fact that a large section of the society depends upon cattle for its livelihood, he questioned if the government is willing to provide them subsidy. 

“Gomukha Vyagragalinda Naadannu Rakshisi,” a book written by A K Subbayya, the senior lawyer and religious leader, was released on the occasion. The author addressed the gathering and said that the peace and prosperity of Mangalore was being destroyed by the Sangh Parivar, owing to which Mangalore has now become a communal city and people are living in fear. He remarked that the BJP-led state government has chosen to make laws for cattle, instead of making laws for human welfare. 

Columnist Shiva Sundar pointed the various studies conducted by the Planning Commission, Dadar Commission, and other commissions have revealed that feeding nearly 60 percent of the cattle is impossible, adding that this will be an additional burden on the farmers, who are already contemplating suicide because they cannot feed their own families. 

Advocate Mohammed Haneef said that Karnataka’s annual budget comprises Rs 56,000 crore. Pointing out that the total cost of feeding cattle for 5 years at the rate of Rs 25 per day is Rs 36,000 crore, he wanted to know where the additional amount will come from. 

Jayan Malpe, leader of the Dasamasa District in Udupi, expressed his anger against the activities of the Sangh Parivar and demanded stern action to be taken against it. 

Anwar Sadath, the district president of Mangalore; Rev Father  Martis, the parish priest of Udyavar; Ali Hassan; Muhammed Kakkinje of Komu Sauharda Vedike; K L Ashok, the state secretary of Komu Sauharda Vedike; and many other leaders of various organization participated in the protest.
