Mangaluru, April 22, 2018: In an interesting happenstance hot political rivals, sitting Congress MLA J. R. Lobo bumped into BJP upstart Vedayvas Kamath while on election campaign trail this afternoon. The chance encounter occurred at about 1:30 p.m. outside the Suryanarayana Temple at Maroli in the city.
J. R. Lobo who had already concluded his visit to the temple was about to leave the venue when Vedavyas Kamath arrived at the same shrine to offer prayers. On seeing Lobo waiting for his car, Vedavyas, who is also known by his pet name ‘Babu’, walked up to the senior legislator and the two exchanged pleasantries and light hearted banter.
They shook hands and Vedavyas hugged Lobo too. Then the BJP aspirant took it upon himself to lend a touch of the dramatic. Tightly clutching Lobo’s hand, he proclaimed: “With your blessing let the elections go on well. Though we are ideologically different, we are both Mangaloreans. So let us work together for the people.”
Then Vedavyas enquired whether Lobo had lunch. “Zavon zalegi?” he said in Konkani, to which Lobo replied in the affirmative, “Zavon zalya”. They then wished each other all the best and dispersed.
Both Lobo and Kamath are contesting for the same seat in Mangalore City South constituency in the state polls scheduled for 12th May.
With the stage set for a bitter, no hold barred fight between Congress and BJP, such good natured exchange between two rival candidates brought a smile of relief on peoples’ face. The photos have also gone viral on social media with the tagline, ‘When Lobo met Babu’.
