OTP for delivery of LPG cylinders, companies roll out new rules from Nov 01

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Oct 16, 2020: Home delivery of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders will require an OTP (one-time-password) from next month. Individuals who wish to receive doorstep delivery of cooking gas cylinders will now need an OTP for the process.

Oil companies are implementing a new system, Delivery Authentication Code (DAC), to prevent theft of cylinders and also for identifying the right customer, according to a few media reports.

The DAC process for home delivery of LPG cylinders will be first implemented in 100 smart cities and will be expanded if the transition is smooth for customers. It may be noted that a pilot project is already underway in Jaipur in Rajasthan.

The new process of delivery is simple. When an individual books the gas cylinder, he/she will get a code on the registered mobile number. At the time of delivery, customers have to show the code for receiving the LPG cylinder. This will ensure that the delivery is not made to an incorrect person.

In a situation where a mobile number is not updated, the delivery person will be able to update the customer’s number in real-time using an application.

The new OTP-based delivery process adds a layer of security, but is likely to cause difficulties for some customers who do not have their details updated with the LPG delivery department.

The address and mobile number of the customer need to be accurate for LPG cylinder home deliveries from November 1 across the 100 smart cities in the country. The system will not be applicable to commercial cylinders.
