Udupi, July 9, 2013: A notorious thief who was an expert in stealing donation boxes from religious shrines was apprehended by the Padubidri police after a hot chase.
The accused is Sanjeeva Mukhari (55)alias Santosh Poojari alias Harish of Innanje near Kaup. It was Padubidri inspector Mahadeva Shetty who first noticed him lurking suspiciously near Tenka Yermal. However, when the man tried to hit the cop who questioned him and took to his heels he was chased and arrested.
Interrogations revealed that he used to steal from shrines and petty shops in several places including Tenka Yermal, Padubidri, Shirva, Uchila and Hejamady and also at Mangalore, Dharmasthala, Vittal, Belthangady and Koppa.
It is learnt, he who was jailed for three years in a theft case in Mangalore was released in March this year. Sources revealed that he was also an HIV positive patient.
Investigations are in progress.
