National-level sports achievers wary of support

Mangaluru, Nov 14, 2017: The kabaddi team of Morarji Desai Residential School in Alampuri near Vagga in the taluk has been selected to the national-level for the second consecutive time.  The lack of basic facilities and the negligence of the department officials have been a discouragement for the students.

The boys’ Under-14 kabaddi team has won the first place in the state-level tournament held in Ballari. Five students of the school were members of the Under-17 girls’ team that bagged the second place in kabaddi tournament. The boys’ team had Panduranga as captain along with Siddappa and Mallikarjuna from the school.

However, the students do not have a full time coach. The physical education director is being paid Rs 5,000 per month for the last few years. The posts of warden, FDA, drawing teacher and computer instructor too are lying vacant.

There is also need for a state-of-the-art stadium for the school. At present, a temporary playground has been built near the school. The students do not have proper space for jogging.

The residential school building was started in 2007. In 2014, the school got a new building. There is only one borewell for the use of teachers and students. The sewage from the toilet has been seeping into the borewell due to unscientific construction of the drain. The place has been a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Local residents and the students fear the spread of diseases, local Gram Panchayat member Suresh Mangaje said.
