Mangalore, Sep 7: The Center for Advanced Studies in Commerce and Management of Canara College in Mangalore organized a 2-day national conference on social responsibilities of educational institutions at T. V. Raman Pai Convention Centre, Kodialbail on September 7, Tuesday, under the aegis of the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT).

M. Abdul Rahman, the former vice chancellor of Kannur and Calicut Universities, delivered the key-note address in which he said that teachers can serve the institutions, which form a very important part of society. He said that teachers must provide high-quality education to students and urged students to develop the habit of reading not only books related to their courses, but also those not related to their subjects of study.

Pointing out the fact that English has become the link to the rest of the world, he said that students do not need literary English, but excellent communicative English and should be trained accordingly. He also urged teachers to teach moral and ethical values to their students. Speaking about the role of teachers, he said that teachers have to take up the responsibilities of NSS, career guidance, coaching, and NCC.

P. V. Krishna Bhatta, the national convener of Prajna Pravaah and MLC, also delivered the key-note address. S. S. Nayak, the correspondent of the college, presided over the inaugural function. Several scholars, experts, and educationists expressed their views on a variety of subjects such as the role of universities and governments, role of managements, role of students, role of teachers, role of teachers’ associations, extension activities of educational institutions, and much more.

Convener of CASCM Dejamma A. delivered the welcome speech. Conveners Prof. Ummappa Poojary P and Seema Prabhu S. along with Dr. G. N. Bhat and General Secretary of AMUCT Dr. Denis Fernandes were present on the dais.
