Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Mar 5, 2015 :  In an interaction with media on March 4, DYFI District President Munir Katipalla said Mangaluru: Nagarika Horata Samithi has alleged that the third stage coke and sulphur units of MRPL, have been causing great amount of environmental pollution threatening lives of people in Jokatte, Kalavaru and nearby villages.

muneer katipallaPollution Control Board should take stern action against violation of rules by MRPL and close the coke and sulphur units.  Nagarika Horata Samithi has been protesting against MRPL’s  negligence.

The fly ash released by the units at MRPL is spread in the rea from the last several months. Also the foul smell has made people particularly the aged and children ill. The fly ash and coke dust is seriously contaminating water in the wells and tanks. Life in 16 villages are adversely affected by the  pollution of environment.

He proceeded to add,  though complaints have been submitted, authorities from district administration have not visited the place. Pollution Control Board officials have not submitted the report to the DC, even after collecting the samples. No action has been initiated against the company either. Nagarika Horata Samithi has filed a complaint against MRPL, at Panambur Police Station and police have issued a notice to the company.  But, its arrogant stance is deplorable.

Efforts of the company to erect a 20 feet sheet around the coke unit, has been stopped by DYFI and Nagarika Horata Samithi. MRPL has been claiming that there was no pollution from its units and that the dust was generated from road works. Hence, the road works were stopped. But, still, the chemical and coke dust are being released, which means that the pollution is caused by the MRPL units.

Minister Abhayachandra Jain has written a letter to chief minister with regard to the pollution caused by MRPL. Other than this, no MLAs, Ministers or MP have visited the spot and are avoiding  responsibility. All concerned urged that immediate action is paramount.   Schoolchildren will stage a protest in front of the MRPL gate at Kuttethur on March 10 at 3.30 pm, he added. Indeed the matter is seriously disturbing to local residents particularly.
