Mangaluru, Dec 30 2019: The fifth edition of NITK Karavali Marathon 2020 will be organised by NITK Alumni Association on January 12.


NITK_Briefing media, NITK Alumni Association President B K Krishnamurthy said that the annual event is organised with a purpose to promote fitness and healthy lifestyle among students and create social awareness among people of the coastal region.

The run started as the beach run in 2015 and it gained momentum over the years and in the 2010 edition was the first full marathon that was inaugurated by P T Usha with over 2,000 participants.

In addition to promoting #Fit India Movement, the 2020 edition of the marathon will drive awareness on combating climate change and call to action in the coastal district, said Krishnamurthy.

He said international athlete and Arjun awardee Arjun Devaiah is the brand ambassador for the marathon. Actor Krishnaa Bhat is the crusader of the Karavali Marathon promoting the cause among the youth.

He said it is the only full marathon (42.2-km) in India that is entirely conducted by the students. More than 4,000 runners are expected to participate. The unique feature of the run is that part of the marathon trail is on the scenic NITK Surathkal beach, along the beachside temple and lighthouse.

Race Director, NITK Karavali Marathon Karthik Pillai said the event also includes half-marathon 21.1-km, 10-km, 5-km races and a 3-km fun race. The event is open for men, women and also children above 10 years. The total prize money is Rs 3 lakh plus sports coupons worth Rs 2 lakh.

Participants will get T-shirts, timing certificate, race photo, immediate results via SMS, physio support for recovery, food and entertainment.
