Udupi, June 22, 2016: Reports have indicated that the SW monsoon took a heavy downpour with at least  four houses damaged and low-lying areas flooded in several  parts of Udupi district due to heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, on June 21, Tuesday.

In fact, Udupi city bore the brunt  of heavy rains. Many areas in the city, including the Rajangana Parking Lot and Mathura Chatra, were disturbed by heavy rain. People had to walk in knee-deep water. Some school students were seen walking to their schools in knee-deep water. Meanwhile, some educational institutions in the city announced a holiday on account of heavy rain.

Houses were damaged in Muloor, Athrady, Avarse and Tenkanidiyur villages in Udupi taluk due to heavy rain and strong winds. The damage to these houses is, in all, estimated at Rs. 1.38 lakh, according to the information provided by the Udupi Taluk Office here.

Also, low-lying areas were flooded in Thekkatte village in Kundapur taluk.  According to the information provided by the Control Room in the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Udupi received a rainfall of 142 mm in the last 24 hours ended at 9.30 a.m. on June 21, Tuesday, while Karkala and Kundapur towns received rainfall of 103 mm and 100.3 mm, respectively.
