Moodbidri, Mar 14, 2014: Mangana Kayile or Kyasanur Forest Disease has been reported from Moodbidri, causing a sort of panic and worry among residents of the area. Health Department has said a 40 year old woman named Indira of Mukrothpalke in Beluvai, is suffering from the disease.
She is presently undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore. The first report of medical tests has proved that she was suffering from the disease while the authorities are awaiting for another medical examination report.
Indira who stays with her husband and five children at Mukrothpalke suffered from fever for a few days after she had visited a nearby hilly area to collect greens, Though she had recovered after treatment at the local clinic, fever recurred again and she collapsed at home.
She was then admitted to local hospital where doctors were not able to ascertain the cause of her fever. Finally, she was taken to Wenlock were after examination doctors have said it is Monkey Disease or Kyasanur Forest Disease, informed Yogini, a relative who is taking care of Indira at the hospital.
It is a fact that monkey population is high in Karkala taluk where monkeys are often spotted.
DK District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Shivakumar said the department has taken precautionary measures and has conducted a survey of 240 houses in Beluvai area. It has tried to find if there was the presence of monkeys in the area but has not found any monkeys.
Health Minister visits hospital: Meanwhile, State Health Minister UT Khader who visited the hospital on March 13, Thursday has directed the health officials to ascertain if Indira was actually suffering from Mangana Kayile.
The Minister later said the government has instructed the department concerned to vaccinate the people against the spread of the disease.
