Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Jan 22, 2016: Indian Sugarcane Farmers Association (ISFA) President Kurubur Shanthakumar has urged  Prime Minister Narendra Modi  to utilize more than 20,000-ton gold worth over Rs.50 lakh crore lying idle in the temples across the nation for the benefit of the distressed farmers and also to alleviate poverty.

PRESS MEET

He was addressing a press meet in Mangaluru Press Club on January on 22 January, Friday. Kurubur said he will write a detailed letter to Prime Minister in this regard. Under the Bharatiya Kisan Manch, farmers from across the country will assemble in front of the Parliament Bhavan in New Delhi on March 10 demanding the government to address farmers’ problems and avert  farmers suicides.

The major demand of the farmers is the implementation of Dr.M.S.Swaminathan committee recommendations to rejuvenate the farm sector, said Kurubur who also heads the Karnataka State Sugarcane Farmers’ Association.

Kurubur also called upon farmers in the coastal districts to form farmers’ private limited companies with the help of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Horticulture Department of Karnataka to help the coconut, rubber and arecanut farmers sail through their problems arising due to the volatile market. Last year, Kurubur launched farmer’s first startup in the state called Raithamitra Farmers Producer Company Limited with an authorized share capital of Rs. 25,00,000 only.

Office-bearers of the Association Attahalli Devaraj, Hallikerehundi Bhagyaraj, Shankar and others were present.
