Mangalore, Aipril 30, 2014: Scene 1 : An aircraft carrying 35 passengers catches fire and is engulfed in flames within a fraction of a second at the Mangalore International Airport.
Scene 2 : Rescue Agencies rush to the spot and carry out relief operations.
The above scenes were witnessed at the Mangalore Airport premises on April 29, Tuesday as part of a routine mock drill exercise.
First the model of the aircraft was set on fire using some crude oil. Soon after ‘injured’ passengers were seen on the ground crying for help. Soon after, the Fire Service Wing vehicle of the airport rushes to the spot, odours water and douses the fire.
The ‘injured’ were shifted in ambulances which had rushed to the spot,. They were then shifted to the hospital. Several senior officials were part of this mock drill exercise to check the alertness and preparedness of the authorities in times of such casualties.
JT. Radhakrishna, Director of Mangalore International Airport said such mock drill exercises are conducted once in every two years in the backdrop of the May 2010 air crash.
HS Varadarajan. Chief of the Fire Service Department, Mangalore Division said the Mangalore Airport Authority, CISF, police personnel, Fire Service Department, Health Department as well as the ambulances, doctors, nurses of Wenlock, KMC, Fr Muller, Yenepoya, Bajpe Primary Health Centre were part of the mock drill exercise held under the leadership of Manjunath, Nodal Officer of the District Disaster Management Committee.
