Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Mar 08, 2016:  Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader on March 7,  Monday said is all for the Government Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, to be a teaching hospital for the proposed government medical college instead of leasing out the hospital to KMC - Kasturba Medical College,  Mangaluru.

Khader pressme...Responding to KMC’s proposal to take the hospital on lease for 30 years, Minister Khader told media that the government has to take a decision on the issue. “The proposal is yet to reach to us,” he said.

KMC has been utilising the 1,000-bed Wenlock Hospital since six decades to provide clinical practice for its undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. Besides paying a clinical fee of about Rs. 2 crore a year, the college is providing services of specialists, laboratory, housekeeping and security to the hospital.  The college, a few days ago, submitted a proposal to the Raksha Samiti of the Hospital, headed by DK DC Adoor.B. Ibrahim, indicating its desire to take the hospital on lease.

Government colleges  :  Minister Khader said the last budget had proposed to establish government medical colleges attached to the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru and the Government Wenlock Hospital.

While the proposal is in the pipeline, a medical college alone could offer enhanced facilities to the poor from Dakshina Kannada and other parts of the state at the hospital, the Minister maintained.  He said, “The present arrangement with the KMC can be continued, with some refinement in conditions, till the medical college is set up and the interests of needy patients are not affected.”

Conditions : Minister  U T Khader said he has demanded all speciality services at the Wenlock by the KMC and offering 50 per cent of MBBS and postgraduate seats to government quota from KMC, in the event of the government accepting KMC -  Kasturba Medical College’s lease proposal.

“A discussion in this regard is essential,’ he said and added that this proposal ultimately has to be vetted by the Finance Department and Medical Education Department.
