Udupi, May 10, 2016: Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the new district library structure at a cost of Rs 5.18 crore, the Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, said the library will cater to the interest of people of various age groups; the new library will be helpful to the students who would like to pursue their career as civil servants. He said there are 163 libraries in the district which also includes 147 gram panchayat libraries.
Minister Sorake said that many library structures do not have a their own building. Instead of going for a new structure, it is better to set up the libraries in the existing school buildings or empty school rooms, said the minister. Most of the Kannada medium schools are empty owing to the lack of attendance, so these school rooms can be used for libraries, he suggested.
Speaking on the occasion, Director of State Library Department, Bengaluru Dr Sathish Kumar S Hosamani said that at least 1,018 libraries in Hyderabad Karnataka region are being upgraded. These libraries would be digitalised, he added.
He said that in Udupi district around 10 libraries will be fully computerised. Attempts are made to offer internet facilities in all the gram panchayats too.
