krishna Palema...Mangalore, August 2: Mangalore Central Jail authorities have assured District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar that they will better the conditions of the jail within a week, following the prisoners’ complaints that the food served in the jail is not palatable.

The prisoners had also requested permission to receive food from their families besides expressing the fear that they will be shifted to other jails if they question the jail authorities and that their families will not be allowed to visit them in jail.

Palemar later visited the jail kitchen and expressed his dissatisfaction over the quality of food served to the prisoners. He even ate some rice and chapattis at the jail and urged the authorities to make the sambar tasty and thick so that the prisoners can eat their food. He also directed the jail authorities to give the inmates rasam as well as sambar. When the inmates told the minister that they get only bones when meat is served, he said that he will pay a surprise visit to the jail once again to test the quality of food.

The minister later inspected the store room to check the quality of rice, dal, and atta. He directed the authorities to discard the existing stock of beaten rice and get some fresh beaten rice because it tastes odd.

Interacting with reporters, he spoke about the possibilities of reforming the situation in jails. He also ordered officials to provide cable TV to the inmates.

One of the employees complained that his living quarters have been damaged by a falling coconut tree, adding that the PWD has not repaired the quarters in spite of repeated complaints. The minister said that he will get the quarters repaired immediately.
