Udupi, Dec 13,2016 :Solemnity and grandeur marked the platinum jubilee celebrations of Milagres Cathedral building at Kallianpur near here on Monday.
A press release issued by the Udupi Catholic Diocese said that prior to the Eucharistic jubilee mass, Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop, Udupi Diocese, inaugurated and blessed the newly-built facade of the church and felicitated the donors.
The solemn Eucharistic mass was concelebrated by Dr. Lobo along with Stany B. Lobo, Rector of the cathedral, and other priests.
In his homily, Dr. Lobo said that the jubilee year was the gift of God. While celebrating the platinum jubilee, the parishioners should remember the sacrifices that their ancestors had done in order to build not only the church but the parish community.
Following the mass, a stage programme was held at the Milagres Tri-centenary Hall. Speaking on the occasion after releasing the platinum jubilee souvenir, Ivan D’Souza, MLC, said that the members of Christian community had rendered remarkable service in the fields of education and healthcare.
The State government had allocated Rs. 125 crores for the development of the Christian community. “We have urged the government to convert the Christian Development Council into a Corporation and to allocate at least Rs. 300 crore for the development of the community in the budget for next fiscal,” he said.
Oscar Fernandes, MP; J.R. Lobo, MLA; Dinakar Babu, president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat; Nalini Pradeep Rao, president of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat; M.A. Gafoor, chairman of the Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation; and Pushpa Kotian, president of the Kallianpur Gram Panchayat, were present.
