Mangalore, Mar 8, 2014: In an incident which may force parents think twice before allowing their kids to have mid day meals under the Akshara Dasoha scheme of the state government, over 70 students of the Kinya Belaringe Higher Primary School had to be hospitalised on March 7, Friday after they fell ill soon after consuming mid-day meals at the school.
All the children who began vomiting and complained of giddiness were rushed to a private hospital at Derlakatte. As many as eight of them were treated at the ICU of the hospital as they were vomiting continuously. Luckily all of them recovered by evening and were discharged. However, one girl named Safreena is still undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Sources said even as they started consuming food, children had complained of foul smell, but were asked to eat it.
Dr Ratnaker, Taluk Medical Officer has said samples of rice and sambar have been taken for lab test. However, the school headmistress Rekha said the rice was fresh and taken from a new sack.
Ullal police too visited the hospital on coming to know of the incident.
